About Betty M M Wong

Betty M M Wong Betty has been painting for several decades, first with Chinese ink, then watercolour and acrylic. She was inspired by many teachers during her art journey, both in Hong Kong and Canada and has never stopped taking workshops to develop her art throughout her working years. A self learner, and now living in Canada, she is embarking on her second career as an artist after retirement, painting full time. She has been exploring new subjects and techniques and continues to challenge her creativity.

'My greatest love is watercolour, a medium which gives me enormous versatility and freedom, as well as a lot of surprises and the unexpected. I have yet to concentrate more on certain subjects as I continue to explore my personal style,' she said. Her works are full of energy, colour, and joy. Her use of colours is bold and experimental and she never hesitates to explore different techniques and presentations. She paints on paper, wood panel and canvas and is also experimenting with different paint surfaces e.g. panel pretreated with watercolour ground, paper mounted on canvas that does not need glass framing etc.

She has won numerous awards in juried shows and has exhibited her works in over 50 shows with lots of positive feedback. She is currently a Signature member of the Toronto Watercolour Society. She also belongs to the Richmond Hill Group of Artists, and the Dynasty Watercolour Association. She has taught seniors to paint at the Carefirst Adult Daycare Centre in Richmond Hill and enjoys seeing her mature students stimulated in their creative endeavours. 'If someone's day was brightened up after seeing my paintings, it is already worth everything,' she said. In 2017, she was invited to run a watercolour workshop for the Aphasia Retreat run by the Ontario March of Dimes where she had volunteered for over 10 years.
